rush hour

cbs logoPilot season is dominating the television industry. Pilots have been ordered, casting is underway, and directors are clamoring to helm the hot comedy or drama that might just become the next Modern Family or Scandal.

There’s a mix of book adaptations, spinoffs, reboots, and original content this season and SSN has gotten a sneak peek at some of the scripts that have the potential to go the distance – meaning, the potential to make it to series, get renewed, and maybe even score some Emmy love.

We’re letting you in on a little bit of insider perspective and kicking it off with a look at five CBS pilots, which range from family comedies to courtroom dramas. Stay tuned for more hot pilots from other networks coming soon.

Here’s our take…

Rush Hour TV ScriptSynopsis:Lee, an aloof, no-nonsense Hong Kong police officer, is assigned to a case in Los Angeles, where he’s forced to work with Carter, a cocky LAPD officer who likes to do things his own way. Studio: Warner Bros TV/Doozer Producers: Bill Lawrence, Blake McCormick, Arthur Sarkissian, Brett Ratner, Jeff Ingold SSN Insight: This one is based on the successful film franchise and Jon Turteltaub recently signed on to direct. Like the films, the banter between Lee and Carter is funny, smart, and well crafted. The script reads like a feature film, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of production value this one has. It could be Miami Vice for the next generation. It’s hard not to think of the witty banter on the cop spoof Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but Rush Hour takes itself a lot more (well, a little more) seriously. If the chemistry between the two leads is as strong as it is on the page, this one could hit.

Doubt Script 2Synopsis: Sadie is a successful defense lawyer at a boutique firm who gets involved with Billy, a wealthy client who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime. Studio: CBS TV Studios/Timberman-Beverly Productions Producers: Tony Phelan, Joan Rater, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly SSN Insight: There’s a lot to like here, even though a few of the jokes fall flat (like the reference to Martha Stewart’s prison cell that should hit the chopping block). The depiction of Billy’s rich, upper-crust mom feels a little over the top, but the main characters (Sadie, her co-worker Albert, and transgender defense attorney Cameron Wirth (who will be played by Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox) are well drawn and slightly more nuanced. The fact an intelligent lawyer like Sadie would have an affair with a client on trial for murder makes it hard to take the leap and root for her (I mean…come on), but there’s potential here, especially with Cox on board.

Untilted ScriptSynopsis: A stand-up comic tries to raise a family in a small Midwestern town. Studio: Warner Bros TV/Doozer Producers: Tommy Johnagin, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold SSN Insight: The pilot was written by Johnagin and Surviving Jack and S#*! My Dad Says creators Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, and it definitely echoes family comedies like Everybody Loves Raymond and Roseanne. There’s a fun role for an actor to play Johnagin’s dad – an aging, wisecracking ladies’ man. There’s nothing particularly new or wildly original here, but the appeal will largely depend on how much people relate to and love Johnagin. Turning stand-up comedians into sitcom stars worked for Roseanne, Ray Romano and Jerry Seinfeld – and not so well for John Mulaney. The characters are relatable and the script has a few very funny moments, but it comes down to Johnagin to wins audiences over.

For Justice ScriptSynopsis: A female FBI agent in the Criminal Section of the Department of Civil Rights Division is caught between the radical family she was born into and the professional family she has chosen. Studio: CBS TV Studios Producers: Rene Balcer, Ava DuVernay, Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, James Patterson, Bill Robinson, Leopoldo Gout, Berry Welsh SSN Insight: This one is based on James Patterson’s novel The Thomas Berryman Number, and with hot director DuVernay (Selma) directing this could turn into something interesting. There’s a strong female protagonist, the writing is solid, and if they cast it right (who wouldn’t want to work with DuVernay right now?) this could turn out to be a smart addition to the lineup.

life in pieces scriptSynopsis: This one follows the daily ups and downs of one multigenerational family, as told in four independent, short vignettes. Studio: 20th TV/Kapital Entertainment ProducersJustin Adler, Aaron Kaplan SSN Insight: Adler wrote this script on spec, and the premise and conceit help it stand out from other multigenerational family comedies like Modern Family and Black-ish. The writing is smart, fresh, and - most important – actually funny. Colin Hanks and Betsy Brandt have come on board to star. Skilled TV director Jason Winer, with credits on Modern Family and New Girl, is directing the single-cam comedy. Bottom-line, this one will resonate with audiences if they can do Adler’s script justice.

SSN Pilot Watch 2015: 6 NBC Pilots Poised to Breakout

NBC_logoIt’s all about multigenerational comedies at NBC – nearly all of the comedy pilots revolve around parents, kids, grandparents, and siblings all trying to coexist and bridge the age gap. SSN is taking a look at the new crop of 2015 pilots, and this week we’re focusing on NBC. Here’s our take on six of the network’s most promising comedy pilots, and one drama pilot. They’re funny, fresh and have the potential to become the next breakout hit.

Film Script Curse of Fuentes WomenSynopsis: When a young man washes up on Miami Beach claiming to be a long-lost family member from Cuba, he brings some much needed energy back into the lives of grandmother Esperanza Fuentes, daughter Lola and granddaughter Soledad. Studio: Warner Bros. TV Writers/Producers: Silvio Horta SSN Insight: This one is from Ugly Betty alum Horta, and it has elements of magic realism (think Like Water For Chocolate) and fantasy. The characters are intriguing, and it’ll be interesting to see how it develops. It’s a unique premise, but it’s hard to see how the story might unfold since it feels more suited to a feature right now. The story explores memory, the Cuban-American experience, Alzheimer’s, and family ties. It might benefit from a bit more humor to balance out the melodrama. Adan Canto, Rachel Ticotin, and Katie Sarife have been cast.

Film Script SuperstoreSynopsis: This one revolves around a group of employees at a big-box store (á la Target), and it looks at the beauty in everyday (and sometimes absurd) moments. Studio: Universal TV Writers/Producers: Justin Spitzer, David Bernad, Ruben Fleischer SSN Insight: This one is from former The Office writer/producer Spitzer, and Zombieland director Fleischer is helming, so it’s definitely in good hands (Fleischer is much better with comedies, as evidenced by Gangster Squad). The dialogue is funny and the setting is ripe for comedy – this is a place that sells ten-dollar engagement rings, flat-screen TVs, and laxatives. There’s romantic tension between two of the employees, there’s a sex-starved, militant boss, and corporate training videos starring Christopher Lloyd. There’s an employee named Mateo Hernandez who has 11 brothers and sisters who are all criminals, which is borderline offensive, but besides that this one has a lot of potential.

Film Script People Are TalkingSynopsis: A comedy examining sex, race, marriage and raising kids. Studio: Universal TV/Will Packer Productions Writers/Producers: DJ Nash, Will Packer SSN Insight: Best friends Mitch (the white guy) and Russell (the black guy), navigate adulthood along with their wives Tracy and Angie. The friendship between the two leads feels genuine on the page, and the banter between the husbands and wives should be relatable for married couples dealing with kids, babysitters, sex, and date nights. Tone Bell and Bresha Webb have been cast, and Pam Fryman (The McCarthys, How I Met Your Mother) is directing.

Film Script untitled suzanneSynopsis: Some empty nesters get a rude awakening when their two 20-something daughters move back home. Studio: Universal TV Writers/Producers: Suzanne Martin, Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner SSN Insight: Hot in Cleveland creator Martin has written a hilarious script about Mike and Martha, a couple who get to let loose (have sex whenever/wherever they want, have cocktails at 3p.m., smoke pot) when their daughters leave for college. When the kids move back in, though, Mike and Martha have to balance parenting with their newfound hedonistic lifestyle. There are more than a few laugh-out-loud lines in the pilot, and the situation has a ton of potential. The grandfather, Bob, advises Mike, “You love your children, you don’t like them,” which will likely be the central conflict of the series. Legendary comedy director and ten-time Emmy winner James Burrows is helming. iCarly’s Miranda Cosgrove will play one of the daughters. If it turns out to be as funny as it is on the page, this one could be a hit.

Film Script Take it from usSynopsis: A couple tells their son the lessons they learned growing up in the ’90s so that he won’t make the same mistakes he did. Studio: Sony Pictures TV/3 Arts Writers/Producers: Greg Malins, Barry Schwartz, Jonathan Berry SSN Insight: The structure of this one is interesting and it could appeal to anyone with a lot of 1990s nostalgia. There’s nothing particularly edgy here, but with the right cast it could break out.

Film Script How we LiveSynopsis: An anthropologist blogger moves to the suburbs with his wife and analyzes his new favorite species: his suburban friends and neighbors. Studio: Universal TV Writers/Producers: Steven Cragg, Brian Bradley, David Janollari SSN Insight: This one’s a little like Up All Night meets Suburgatory, with characters who are desperately trying to stay cool and relevant even as they’re struggling with fertility issues, work and marriage. The main character narrates, sharing his anthropological observations about suburbia throughout the pilot. There are a lot of characters to keep up with in the pilot so it’s hard to connect with anyone in particular, but that could change in time. Lindsay Price, Chris Klein, Jared Gertner, and Andrea Anders have been cast.
